Solar Hot Water

How Solar Hot Water Works

Cold water is pumped through the roof panels, and is heated by the sun. The heated water then returns to the tank, and is stored for later use. At night (or on especially overcast days), the gas or electric booster makes sure the water is heated to a usable temperature.

Let the sun shine in

If you're not using the sun to heat the hot water in your home, not only are you wasting your money, you're also contributing to global warming. Old technology "conventional" water heaters are mostly the biggest energy users in the home and can contribute up to 7 tonnes of greenhouse gas annually.

On a per capita basis, Australians are the biggest greenhouse gas polluters on the planet, but in recent years changes to building regulations are encouraging greater use of the sun's free energy leading to an increased usage of solar hot water systems. People who install new solar panels and solar systems, or convert their existing tanks to solar hot water systems, are not only saving hundreds of dollars in energy costs, they're also cutting their greenhouse emissions by 3 to 5 tonnes a year.

The old myths that you run short of hot water when the sun doesn't shine or that it takes a long time to install a solar hot water system are just that - myths. While most of the energy comes free from the sun, electric or gas boosters automatically cut in if the weather turns bad, so there's always plenty of hot water, and a solar system installation can be completed in a matter of hours.

Chromagen has been in the solar hot water industry since 1962 and boasts over a million happy customers worldwide. Their engineers have developed state-of-the-art systems designed to soak up as much free solar energy as possible in countries where sunshine isn't so plentiful, like Europe and North America. And now, Australians can take advantage of this superior technology.

A key factor is the all-copper design of the solar panels. Not only is copper the best conductor of heat, it also goes the distance so far as longevity is concerned. They look good too! Chromagen's diverse range of solar panel models means there is no need for any ugly bulge up on the roof.

Chromagen solar water heaters use the Sun's unlimited FREE energy to provide up to 90% of your hot water.

PV Solar Power

How Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Power Works - Your own mini power station

Solar electric panels generate electricity using the photovoltaic (PV) effect. The solar panels are fitted to your roof and convert light into solar electricity. This solar power electricity is fed through an inverter directly to the house and through a meter directly into the grid.

When you consume electricity you are using solar generated power or power from the grid, if the solar energy is insufficient. If you are using little or no electricity, your solar energy system is feeding electricity back into the grid and the electricity retailer buys that power from you at their agreed feed-in-tariff.

In effect, your home becomes a mini power station generating electricity and selling it to the grid for use by you or your neighbours. If you consistently generate more solar power electricity than you use, the electricity company will pay you for the excess.

Gross vs net feed in tariff

A net feed in tariff, also known as export metering, pays the PV system owner only for surplus energy they produce, whereas a gross feed in tariff pays for each kilowatt hour produced by a grid connected system. It's a very important difference.

Solar Feed-in tariffs for Solar Bonus Scheme customers

The statutory Solar Bonus Scheme payments to customers have not changed.  They are:

  • Customers who joined the Scheme on or before 27 October 2010 receive Solar Bonus scheme payments of 60 cents per kilowatt hour for renewable energy generated and exported to the grid.
  • Customers who joined the scheme between 28 October 2010 and 28 April 2011 receive Solar Bonus scheme payments of 20 cents per kilowatt hour for renewable energy generated and exported to the grid.
  • Applications to the Solar Bonus Scheme closed on 28 April 2011.

Recently IPART determined that from 1 July 2012 retailers must contribute 7.7c per kWh in 2012/13 for each eligible kWh exported to the grid under the Solar Bonus Scheme.  This amount would otherwise have been recovered from electricity prices.  Solar Bonus Scheme customers will still receive the 60 or 20c per kWh for electricity exported.

In the past some retailers paid customers a voluntary premium of 6 to 8 c/kWh on top of the statutory Solar Bonus Scheme rates. Many retailers have reduced or eliminated these voluntary payments upon the introduction of the retailer contribution.

Retailers have advised us of their solar feed-in tariffs and we have reproduced these below.  We recommend that you check the retailer's website or contact the retailer directly to confirm whether solar feed-in tariffs displayed below are available with a particular offer.

Customers who are not eligible for Solar Bonus Scheme payments

Customers can still connect a renewable energy generator to the grid, but are not eligible to receive the Solar Bonus Scheme payments.

The Government asked IPART to recommend a fair and reasonable feed-in tariff for electricity generated and exported to the grid by small scale solar units. IPART found that a fair and reasonable feed-in tariff for customers who are not eligible for the Solar Bonus Scheme is in the range of 7.7 to 12.9 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity exported to the grid in 2012/13.

This benchmark range is intended to provide a guide for customers as to the value of the electricity their small scale solar units export to the grid in 2012/13. However, retailers are not required to offer feed-in tariffs within this range.  They are able to set their own feed-in tariffs.

Retailers have advised us of their solar feed-in tariffs and we have reproduced these below.  We recommend that you check the retailer's website or contact the retailer directly to confirm whether solar feed-in tariffs displayed below are available with a particular offer.

Air source heat pump

Make savings appear out of thin air with a Midea air source heat pump from Chromagen.

A heat pump is another form of efficient water heating that can harvest the free energy from our plentiful air to efficiently heat your water. This renewable energy water heating technology will reduce home energy costs by up to 65%* whilst providing steaming hot water all day and night.
(*Energy use reduction based on CER (AS/NZ 4324) modelling).

Heat pumps do not require roof mounted thermal collectors and are therefore ideal when available roof space is limited or shaded by trees.

Heat pumps utilise an ingenious technology to efficiently transfer thermal energy directly from the surrounding air, and so do not rely on the sunlight or fossil fuels to provide a constant energy source.

How a heat pump works:

  1. A fan draws in air, containing heat energy, across the evaporator.chromagen-heat-pump-cutopen.png - small
  2. The evaporator turns the liquid refrigerant into a gas
  3. The compressor pressurises the refrigerant into a hot gas
  4. The hot gas inside the condenser coil heats the water inside the coil-wrapped tank
  5. The refrigerant reverts back to a liquid after expansion and continues back to the evaporator for the process to start again

The benefits of a hot water heat pump:

  • A reliable supply of hot water in any weather or time of dayenergy_efficiency_graph_03Heat-pump.png - small
  • Reduces power consumption and power bills
  • Improves the energy efficiency of your home
  • Reduces emissions of harmful greenhouse gases
  • Compact footprint
